Assemblation Questions....

Postby jsteeb on Mon May 04, 2009 7:57 pm

Hi guys...I've been putting some of the pcs and parts together, and I have a couple of questions...

1) Spindle nuts? What are people using? The clamp nuts I have will not fit inside the dust cap. The thrust washers I have also don't seem to fit the spindle very well....as in the little finger on the inside radius of the washer doesn't actually get trapped in the groove on the spindle. Special note to this one...It also looks like the spindles on the ball joint beam I bought (which came with rotors and calipers) are drum brake spindles  Are there different clamp nuts for different spindles? Are disc brake spindles different from drum brake spindles?
2) Caliper brakcets? Due to my problem with the different spindles, and the fact that the beam did not come with any kind of caliper bracket, is it possible to just purchas a pair of caliper brackets from somerwhere? Or am I stuck buying new spindles?

Thanks!

The nuts are all the same, disc or drum. Can't help you on the clearance problem or the thrust washer without a photo. I will say that some of the new ones need to be "fitted"

Disc and drum front spindles are different (clamp nuts are universal fit)

I think you're going to need the disc brake spindles. I've seen bracket kits for link pin beams, but not for ball joint beams.

Will you come visit with us at Grattan? It would sure give you a chance to review a beam assembly or two.

2) Caliper brackets are free. Make your own if that is only problem .... but I expect different inner wheel bearings and clearance issues on hub that require spacers or ?
I would have had a pair of spindles for you ..... but I am behind schedule and my new ones are not ready. Next year!

Well....I didn't make Grattan, so here are some pics.

First the Spindle nut. Do the clamp nuts usually need to be ground? Do the dust caps fit inside or outside (yellow circle or red circle)? I bought some universal dust caps from NAPA. Mike Waltrip assured me they would fit!

Next up the spindles / calipers. I take it I have drum brake spindles? Too bad those red lines are not steel....

Anyway....glad to hear Grattan was a great time - and lot's of cars too!!!

Cheers!

Jason,

We missed not seeing you at Grattan. Hopefully, we'll still get to see you this summer.

The dust cap goes on the outside (yellow circle). The clamp nuts do not need grinding. The fitting is sometimes needed for a lack of squareness/flatness at the thrust washer contact area.

Yep, those are drum brake spindles.
